How to Vacation like JFK and Jackie
Look no further for inspiration for your next trip. Whether sailing off Hyannis Port or attending state dinners in San Juan, the Kennedys knew how to travel right.
Hyannis Port, MA
The future president grew up on the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port, Cape Cod, which always had a special place in JFK's heart. He once said, "I always go to Hyannis Port to be revived, to know again the power of the sea, and the Master who rules over it and all of us."
Where to Stay: While you cannot stay at the Kennedy Compound (unless you're friends with Connor or Kick Kennedy, of course), you can rest your legs at the Anchor-In, which boasts an estate-like atmosphere.
Where to Eat: Get a bowl of clam chowder, JFK's favorite dish, at Black Cat Tavern.
Newport, RI
Jackie Bouvier became Jackie Kennedy when she married JFK at her family's Newport estate, Hammersmith Farm, in 1953. Newport remained a favorite vacation spot for the couple until JFK's death in 1963.
Where to Stay: Overlooking the harbor and with a 19th century homey ambiance, Castle Hill Inn is about as close as you can get to Hammersmith Farm. We think Jackie would approve.
Where to Eat: If you don't have a private chef to fix your favorite meals like JFK had, you can still enjoy great dishes from celebrated Executive Chef J. Daniel Knerr at the all-American The Black Pearl.
Palm Beach, FL
Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., JFK's father, purchased this West Palm Beach estate in 1933. During JFK's presidency, the estate earned the nickname "The Summer White House" when it became one of the First Family's main getaways. In May 2014, the house went on the market for $38.5 million.
Where to Stay: The Breakers, with its 140 oceanfront acres and multiples spa services, is the swankiest hotel on Palm Beach. You can even play golf, one of JFK's favorite pastimes, at the 18-hole Ocean Course.
Where to Eat: Try JFK's favorite burger in Palm Beach at Hamburger Heaven.
Acapulco, Mexico
Jack and Jackie honeymooned in Acapulco in September 1953.
Where to Stay: Once the secluded getaway of J. Paul Getty, the Fairmont Pierre Marques is the quintessential Acapulco destination. The resort maintains its 1950s retro feel while offering beloved Kennedy activities such as golf, tennis, and swimming.
Where to Eat: Carmenère is a classic wine bar and restaurant that offers elevated dishes such as veal filet with foie gras and papaya mousse.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
JFK and Jackie visited Governor of Puerto Rico Luis Muñoz Marín in December 1961.
Where to Stay: JFK stayed at the San Juan Intercontinental during his visit. The hotel is situated right on the coast, with sublime views of palm tree-lined beach.
Where to Eat: Grab breakfast at the Patio Del Nispero in the Hotel El Convento. Their Eggs Benedict, with Canadian bacon and red bliss potatoes, is a president-worthy one.
Dublin, Ireland
In June 1963 JFK got back to his Irish Catholic roots when he addressed Parliament and attended a family reunion in this Irish city. Even after his death, Jackie continued to take the family there on vacations.
Where to Stay: Situated in the center of Georgian Dublin, the Merrion Hotel exudes a stately elegance comparable to Jackie's 1961 White House restoration. The first family would have felt right at home at the Merrion, which is just steps from a line of government buildings, a trickle of boutiques, and a handful of art galleries.
Where to Eat: One of the hottest tables in Dublin, the Winding Stair elevates traditional Irish cuisine with plates such as hand-smoked haddock poached in milk with crunchy onions. The majestic view of the River Liffey and Ha'penny Bridge isn't too bad, either.
