Before Instagram became the preferred medium of the "humblebrag," one's cultural aptitude was broadcast by concrete proof of attendance at high-minded events, including the seemingly forgotten metal museum pin. Upon spotting the telltale totem, a lunch companion might ask, "Were you at the Met this morning?" Before removing the evidence from one's lapel, one might discuss the finer points of an exhibition or unilaterally dismiss an artist from the canon. When news broke that due to budget cuts the Metropolitan Museum of Art would stop distributing admission buttons, many described it as the end of an era, akin to the demise of subway tokens and corner pay phones. Without a pin on your suit, or a collection on an entryway table, how will friends, acquaintances, and the general public know where you've been and what a fine eye for art you have? Here's an idea: Take a picture of this page and post it on Instagram. We promise to like it.
